Three-Media Exhibit

What:

Westhaven Center for the Arts opens a Three-Media exhibit Sunday, January 9 from 1 - 4 pm at the Center. Featured in the exhibit are drawings from Joe Cusimano, sculptures by John Wiebe, and glass work from Mirador Glass. Joe Cusimano is a Vietnam veteran who taught Fine Arts at Jersey City State College. Some of his drawings deal with his Vietnam experience and one of his works was selected as part of a nation-wide “Healing The Wounds” traveling exhibition of art by Vietnam veterans. Cusimano describes his work as “eclectic graphic style pencil illustrations using styles borrowed from nature and the human form.” John Wiebe, an educator for many years in three continents creates sculptures from natural objects.  A few of his award-winning sculptures project a haunting message, others are abstract.  Three pieces are on loan from private collections and some are on exhibit for the first time. Wiebe also arranged for the display of a wood sculpture of a cougar by Orick artist Gwen Ontiveros “If my pieces speak it is in a variety of voices as understood by each listener,” notes Wiebe.  “Stone and wood, all naturally developed substances formed by the Earth, shaped and layered, contorted and distorted by time and turmoil, may be revealed.  In following the layers and the curvatures, the growth patterns, variegated structures of each substance,  eventually,  perhaps instinctively or  intuitively some aspects of the human experience becomes evident, perhaps a little like a Rorschach test.  The essence  of the substance is revealed at least to the eye or the touch of the observer.”  Mirador Glass in McKinleyville specializes in hand blown, one-of-a-kind lampshades and glassware designed by artists/owners Bryan Raskin and Wesley Hodges. Mirador glass blowers use a specially designed German-made glass and a unique formula to create warm earthen tones and intricate patterns in their products. A variety of their creations will be on display at the exhibit. “Three-Media” opens January 9 with a reception for all three artists. Westhaven Center for the Arts is located at 501 S. Westhaven drive, about four miles north of McKinleyville. Call 677-9493 for more information.
