Swauger’s Station Day

What:

Swauger’s Station days originally began with the Dairymen’s picnic, an annual July community event where music, dancing, children’s games and plenty to eat brought the entire community together. The last Dairymen’s picnic was held in the 1920’s and Swauger’s Station day has evolved in its place. Held each year on the second Sunday in July, the day’s activities include live music and entertainment, a barbecue, Indian tacos, children’s games, demonstrations, displays, exhibits, antique cars, a marketplace, local food tasting and all around family fun.

This year it will also feature two walk/runs and a 44 mile bike race.  All ages are welcome to attend.
It’s the third annual Jim Davy Tour of Loleta.  This is a very scenic race that starts and ends in the town of Loleta. Relatively flat with minor hills taking you through the Loleta Bottoms, along the ocean, and back through the foothills on paved surface.  Adventure’s Edge bike mechanic on site at atart/finish line.
For more information call  707 498 6348

Race Times:

Bikes 28,44 and 74 mile     7am
Bikes 7.8 mile fun ride         8am
Run/Walk  7.8 & 2.2 mile    10:30am

History:  In 1884 Eel river and Eureka railroads built Swauger’s Station (now Loleta). In 1898 a larger depot was constructed and as Swauger’s Station had been the name of the old depot, the new station was named Loleta. The community was apparently not satisfied with the name Swauger’s and adopted the place name that Wiyot people had always used. Loleta a Wiyot word meant “pleasant place at the end of the water.” No other word could better describe the township of Loleta.
