Sunday Afternoon Jazz
What:
For over 80 years the Eureka Inn was not only a national landmark, but a focal point for the Eureka community. The spacious lobby was a common meet-up location, with sophisticated jazz tones often flowing out from the Palm Lounge. Every year this activity culminated with a huge Christmas tree, elaborate holiday decorations, dances, and other activities in the lobby.
When the inn closed its doors in 2004, many worried that the cultural center of Eureka would be lost forever. But since the Inn’s reopening earlier this year, owner Libo Zhu is gradually ramping up the historic hotel’s community focus. As part of this new emphasis, the Eureka Inn will be providing live jazz in its lobby on Sunday, September 12, from 2-4 PM. T he 24/7 Jazz Trio will perform with Al Macy on the Inn’s newly renovated grand piano.
“We want to show Humboldt county that the Eureka Inn isn’t just for passing travelers.” says the enthusiastic new owner, “So drop in on Sunday for the free show and visit with your friends. You’ll be glad you did”
Visitors will find the lobby just as they remember it, with a soaring ceiling, balustrades on the mezzanine, and warm carpeting.
The 24/7 jazz Trio (www.247Jazz.com), with Bill Andrews on bass and Bob Higgons on drums, concentrates on the same jazz standards that were popular during the Inn’s first decades. Standards such as Fly me to the Moon, Blue Monk, and Pennies from Heaven. The group is well known around town, performing at the Ingomar Club, Arcata Theater Lounge, and Arkley Center.
So if you want to re-experience Eureka’s premiere national historic landmark, swing by the Eureka Inn on Sunday, September 12 for an afternoon of free, live jazz. For more information, call the inn at 497-6093.
