Storyteller Olga Loya

What:

Dia de los ninos / Dia de los libros (Children’s Day / Book Day) is celebrated on April 30 each year. This year the Humboldt County Library System received a grant to present two preliminary programs in honor of this event. Bilingual storyteller, Olga Loya, will be sharing stories in Spanish and English on Friday, April 23 at 10:30 AM at the Fortuna Library. At the end of her presentation, a free Spanish picture book will be available to all children, who attend the program.

On Saturday, April 24 at 1 PM, the Bilingual Storytime will be held in the Children’s Room at the Humboldt County Library in Eureka. At 2 PM that afternoon, Olga Loya will be sharing stories in Spanish and English in the Large Meeting Room. Following her presentation there will be craft activities, refreshments and a free Spanish book for each child who attends this event.

Ms. Loya grew up in East Los Angeles, listening to stories. Both her father and grandmother loved sharing folktales and stories about their lives. In 1980, when she attended a storytelling conference, Olga began to remember these stories from her childhood and developed a passion for sharing them with a larger audience. Ms. Loya lives in San Jose now, but she spent many years in Humboldt County and this is where she honed her skills. Older residents may remember her Open Mike Storytelling evenings at the Jambalaya in Arcata.

Olga Loya has shared her stories throughout the United States and Mexico. In addition to her storytelling, she is also an author, recording artist and teacher. She has been a California Arts Resident for K - 8 schools and worked extensively with preschools in the state.

These programs are free and open to all ages. The Humboldt County Library is located at 1313 3rd Street in Eureka. The Library’s programs and services are accessible to persons with disabilities. Please let us know if you require assistance. For further information call JoAnn Bauer at 269-1910 or visit our website at www.humlib.org.
