State/Local Politics “How To” Workshop

What:

Tired of our career politicians?  Want to learn how government works?  Interested in being a citizen candidate? Want to work towards putting our government back in the hands of its citizens?  If you have ever considered running for public office or if you want a better understanding on how our government functions come to a local and state politics workshop being held at Humboldt Area Foundation on Thursday, January 21 at 6:30 pm.

The workshop will cover the basic set up, or structure, of state and local government (including special districts) in California; how laws are made in the legislature; and ways to get involved with the local, state, or national political process.  The workshop is free but there will be a $5 materials fee, which includes a book.

The instructor is Gary Sokolow, who served as a state legislator, was elected prosecuting attorney, and practiced law for ten years in the Midwest.  Since 1998 he has been a professor of criminal justice (also teaching political science courses) at CR’s Eureka campus.  “With our run-away state and national government, it is pretty obvious that we all need to be more involved,” comments Sokolow.  “This workshop is designed to equip citizens with the information they need to get involved so that our government can once again serve its constituents,” he adds.

Everyone is welcomed.  The class is hands-on where attendees will look at some websites for citizen involvement and there’ll be some workshop activities for people to learn more about issues they are concerned with.  Learn by the use of current examples (such as health care reform) to illustrate how the process works.  The class will also include some informational as well as a good general book on Calif. government.

Seating is limited.  To reserve a seat, call Gwen Morris at 498-3101.  The workshop is sponsored by Humboldt Tea Party Patriots, a local grassroots, bottom up organization of citizens concerned about high debt and taxes, special interest control of our government and the Unconstitutional actions of all branches and levels of government.  Tea Party Patriots all across the country are united by the desire for constitutionally limited government, fiscal responsibility, and free markets.  In 2009 over 4 million people stood up to protest their government and join the patriot fire-storm of the Tea Party movement.  For more information go to www.teapartypatriots.org at the local level it is www.humboldtteapartypatriots.org
