Producer Lloyd Maines recalls hearing The Stairwell Sisters for the first time: “I happened upon this tribe of women musicians, playing old-time string music, with the power and excitement of a great rock band.” Tribe of women indeed. Evie Ladin explains what holds sway with the sisters, themes similarly found in one of their early influences, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard: “not exactly the sweet and tender ladies, but the stand up for yourself and face the world kind of women.” Which is exactly the kind of women that make up The Stairwell Sisters. Evie, Stephanie Prausnitz. Lisa Berman, Martha Hawthorne, and Sue Sandlin are career women, organizers, activists and mamas; making ends meet working and living in San Francisco. They also happen to crank out acoustic, old-time music with a punk-rock intensity. Somehow, between raising children, working and releasing records, they’ve taken their band to some rather well-regarded places - appearing on “A Prairie Home Companion,” festival stages from Lincoln Center (NYC) and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (SF) to Celtic Connections (UK), and many points in between.

Striped Pig Stringband likes to squaredance! Favorite gig is a dance; A hot, sweaty hall is a great thing. They want people to come out and get their hands dirty dancing, so come on boys and girls… Dance! They love where they live, Humboldt county is a special place for sure, all of the band has passed the ‘local’ marker, none being natives. The north coast of California and the Northwest for that matter offers an isolation for individual sounds to come through, and a great place to have a vibrant dance community. The band members have come to old time music via various routes, played other instruments in previous incarnations of music from country to rock and roll, punk, to jazz, celtic, bluegrass, but no classical….. which has led them all to the old time string band!

“To be in the presence of Huckleberry Flint is to be in the presence of something special. Something pure and earnest and good. And that’s before they start playing.” Jennifer Savage-Arcata Eye. Huckleberry Flint, hailing from Humboldt County, is a five-piece string band who gathers their influences from a wide spectrum of musical styles, tying them all together with an oldtime folksy sound. High energy fiddle tunes, slow sauntering ballads with haunting harmonies, and everything in between make up a live performance not to be missed. Huckleberry Flint is comprised of Dustin Taylor (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Adam Dick (mandolin, banjo, vocals), Marybeth Taylor (fiddle, vocals), Kevin Porter (guitar, dobro, snare drum, triangle, vocals), and Joseph Digerness (double bass, pedal steel guitar).
