Spiff Up The Zoo

What:

Eureka, March 12, 2010 – Sequoia Park Zoo’s AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) accreditation review is coming up fast, so the Zoo needs your help to make sure it looks its best. Accreditation shows that the Sequoia Park Zoo is a top-notch facility with high standard of animal care and conservation that offers the best possible visitor experience, so it’s important that the Zoo makes a good impression on the AZA review team.

At the top of the list for this round of spiff days are fresh coats of paint or stain on fencing, benches and handrails, along with general tidying-up of the plantings and other common areas. So if you’re handy with a paintbrush or a pair of shears, the Zoo would love to hear from you.

“The spiff days we held last fall were tremendous,” says Zoo Manager Gretchen Ziegler.  “The community turned out in force, and the work they  accomplished was amazing—the quality, too. With the cuts to  Zoo and Parks Department budgets, we need all the help we can get.”

If you love the zoo and want to see accreditation continue, please join us for the next volunteer workday:

 Saturday March 20, 2010; 10-2

Zoo provides work supplies, and volunteers are asked to bring their favorite 1” paintbrush. Everyone who participates will get a free Zoo souvenir mug and popcorn.

If you know you can attend, just call 441-2463 to RSVP. If you’re not yet sure you can make it, that’s OK, just show up, they won’t turn away a willing pair of hands!  And, if you can’t make this date, more help will be needed over the next couple of months with a variety of “spiff-up” projects before the accreditation inspection.  Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The mission of the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation is to promote and stimulate interest in the Sequoia Park Zoo and support the zoo’s development, operation and education programs through fundraising, marketing, and other initiatives designed to enhance the zoo experience.
