Snapshot: A Day in the Life of Local Libraries

What:

The Humboldt County Library in Eureka is joining libraries across the state in participating in “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of California Libraries.”  On Wednesday,

October 6 from noon to 8 PM, the public is invited to participate in this event.  This Snapshot Day has been developed by the California State Library to demonstrate the many ways that libraries provide invaluable services to the people of California.  Academic, public, school and special libraries throughout the state will be included.

Volunteers will be available on October 6, taking photos (with permission of the subjects), asking patrons to fill out short surveys and keeping statistics on attendance, materials checked out and other benchmarks of service.  Kim Bui-Burton, CLA President and Director of the Monterey Public Library, says “I invite all California community members of any age to visit their library on this historic day and be part of this first ever “snapshot” of California libraries.  Every kind of library provides unique and irreplaceable services; we know this because in communities across the state library usage is rising, and demand is growing for books and other resources, knowledgeable staff assistance and computer / internet access - despite budget cuts, reduced hours and programs.  We believe this California libraries “snapshot” will show the essential library services and life changing experiences that California’s communities depend on, especially during these times of severe economic distress.  We look forward to capturing this “day in the life of California libraries” to demonstrate to decision makers the extent that our patrons, customers and future leaders rely on California libraries for critical library services, resources and programs - now, more than ever.”

Many Humboldt County Library Branches will also be participating in “Snapshot Day.” Please contact your local libraries for information on their planned activities.

This event is free and all ages are welcome. The Library’s programs and services are accessible to persons with disabilities. Please let us know if you require assistance. The Humboldt County Library is located at 1313 3rd St. in Eureka. For further information call JoAnn Bauer at 269-1910 or visit our website at www.humlib.org.
