Thrashin’, also known as Skate Gang, is a 1986 American skater drama film. The film is directed by David Winters, and stars Josh Brolin, Robert Rusler, features Pamela Gidley and has appearances from many famous skaters including Tony Alva, Tony Hawk, and Steve Caballero. Valley boys take on the punk rockers in this teen-age adventure. This time they use skateboards instead of zip guns, knives and fists. The rich Valley kids, “The Ramp Locals,” are led by Corey Webster, while the leather-clad, street-wise punks follow Tommy Hook. The trouble begins when Corey falls in love with Tommy’s little sister who has come from Indiana for a visit. The rivalry between the gangs culminates during the grueling “LA Massacre,” a 20-mile downhill skateboarding race. The winning team will earn a corporate sponsor.
The Search for Animal Chin (1987) is a skateboarding film featuring the Bones Brigade (Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero). It is one of the first skateboarding films to have a plot. The Bones Brigade travels around California, Nevada, and Hawaii to different skate spots in search of a wizened old man, Won Ton “Animal” Chin. The movie is of the old-school nomadic, skate-everything-in-your-path genre with interludes of stopping to rip-up a big ramp, pool or kicker. After much searching and skateboarding, they locate a large ramp in the desert and find a Chinese character on the inside of the ramp’s spine…
