Sisters with Strings
What:
Arcata-based all-female string bands the Singing Nettles and the Vintners’ Daughters have been fantasizing for months about putting on a show to showcase their lady-pickin’ and songwriting passions. The two groups will finally come together to perform at the Arcata Playhouse on Thursday, April 1 in a night they have dubbed “Sisters with Strings”: a celebration of femme-folk and girlie-grass featuring the Singing Nettles and the Vintners’ Daughters.
The Singing Nettles are a 6-gal string band that has performed extensively around Arts! Alive and Arts! Arcata events for the past year. Their lineup includes Morgan Corviday, Laurel and Alanna Goldsmith, Candace Wase, Michelle Ganong and Leah Mahan. Switching between guitar, upright bass, cello, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and ukulele, the Nettles sing originals and traditionals with beautiful harmonies.
The Vintners’ Daughters are a relatively new folk trio with a focus on songwriting and intricate arrangements. Nola Pierce and Melody Walker of AkaBella team up with fiddler Amanda Lake to present an eclectic blend of blues, old-time, jazz, gypsy, folk, bluegrass, funk and a little bit of hip-hop. All three women rotate around an instrumentation that includes guitar, upright bass, banjos, accordion, and fiddle, and they sing in three-part harmony. The Daughters can usually be found on Tuesday nights at 3 Foods Café in Arcata from 6-9pm.
Tickets for Sisters with Strings are $8 in advance or $10 at the door, and will be available at the Works in Arcata and Eureka. The Arcata Playhouse is located at 1251 9th Street in the Old Creamery Building in Arcata. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the show will commence at 8:00pm. Beer, wine and treats will be served at the bar, and all ages are welcome. Kids under 10 are free!
