SFJAZZ Collective

CenterArts presents the SFJAZZ Collective on Saturday, March 6th, 2010 at 8 p.m. in the Van Duzer Theatre, HSU. An all-star, mega-band launched in 2004 by the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the Collective has quickly become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the jazz scene. Balancing classic works by great jazz composers with new compositions commissioned for the band, the Collective embodies the message that jazz is an exciting, living, ever-changing, and ever-relevant art form. Each year the group performs works by a modern master—this year, legendary jazz pianist Horace Silver—and one new piece by each of the Collective members. Tickets are $35 general, $30 Senior/Child and $25 HSU students. Tickets are available at the Works in Arcata and Eureka, University Ticket Office at HSU or at centerarts.humboldt.edu.
The SFJAZZ Collective will welcome tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianist Edward Simon. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris also returns to the Collective after a one-year hiatus from the band. The all-star roster includes veteran alto
saxophonist Miguel Zenón, trombonist Robin Eubanks, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Eric Harland. The Collective’s new lineup strikes a perfect balance among founding members, multi-year veterans and exciting newcomers.
