Second Saturday Family Arts Day: Black History Month

What:

Join the Humboldt Arts Council and the Morris Graves Museum of Art at Second Saturday Family Arts Day! Saturday, February 13, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Morris Graves Museum of Art.   This Saturday’s presenters will include Zumbatomic with Marla Joy from 2:00-2:30 pm in the Performance Rotunda, Storytelling with Ali Freedlund from 3:00-3:30 pm in the Performance Rotunda, Art for Black History Month with Janice Sharman-Hand in the Youth Classroomfrom 2-4pm, and Langston Hughes Valentines in the Anderson Gallery.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a time to commemorate African-Americans who have changed the world.  Celebrating Black History began in 1926, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard Ph.D., initiated “Negro History Week.” Dr. Woodson, a historian, chose the second week in February because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, the Bicentennial (200th birthday) of the U.S.A., the week-long observance was extended to the entire month of February in order to have enough time for celebratory programs and activities.  As a poet and playwright, Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was a leading African-American writer during the Harlem Renaissance in New York. He also wrote novels, short stories, songs, and children’s books.  Join us as we make Valentine’s celebrating his poetry for freedom and equality.

Zumbatomic with Marla Joy

Marla Joy has taught Zumba classes in Humboldt County for the past year and a half.  Zumba is a Latin inspired fitness program with a diversity of dance styles.  This will be the debut of the Zumbatomic children’s program in Humboldt County.  Zumbatomic is a Zumba program geared towards youth 4-12 years old, but parents may join in the fun too!  How did Zumbatomic come to be???  One day, a scientist named Mr. Tomic was looking for a formula for happiness. After many trials he discovered that the formula is dance, music and exercise, and he stumbled upon Zumbatomic; an explosion of music, dance and energy!

Storytelling with Ali Freedlund

Ali has lived on the north coast for over 30 years. She worked with Human Nature Theatre Productions out of Petrolia, California for over a decade and loves to perform. Many of her stories are a celebration of this beautiful area and the many creatures that live here. Through these stories she hopes to empower all ages to love and appreciate this place and each other.

Art for Black History Month with Janice Sharman-Hand

Join artist Janice Sharman-Hand from 2-4pm in the Youth Classroom! Janice holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art as well as a teaching credential in Art from Humboldt State University.  Janice has been teaching visual arts with an emphasis on drawing to youth at the Morris Graves Museum of Art for the past eight years. Currently Janice is offering after-school classes at the MGMA that focus on developing a life long appreciation of arts and culture by actively involving youth with exhibitions through hands-on art instruction.  For more information visit www.humboldtarts.org.
