Second Saturday Family Arts Day

What:

Come join in the fun at Second Saturday Family Arts Day, Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Morris Graves Museum of Art.   This Saturday, don’t miss a special spring performance from the Freshwater School Jazz Combo… and try your hand at Spring Fabric Landscape Decoupage inspired by the Humboldt School of Landscape Painting Exhibit.  Activities begin at 2pm.  There is a $5.00 suggested donation at the door.

HumboldtSchool of Landscape Painting Exhibit

Over the past several decades, Humboldt County has nurtured a wealth of contemporary landscape painters. A combination of the dramatic local landscape, a vibrant art, and the effects of a back-to-the-land ethic has coalesced into a regional school of painting. All the artists involved share, in one way or another, the same goal- to express their reverence for the natural beauty of the place they have chosen to call home. The exhibit runs May 3 through June 24.

Children will create Spring Fabric Landscapes inspired by this exhibit through the art of decoupage.   With decoupage, a work of art is created by gluing cutouts onto an object in combination with special paint effects such as gold leaf. Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the “stuck on” appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique used 30–40 layers of varnish which were then sanded to a polished finish. This was known in 18th century England as the art of Japanning after its presumed origins.

Freshwater Jazz Combo

Located five miles from Eureka and serving approximately 300 students, the Freshwater School District consists of a K-6 elementary school and a charter middle school. Music is an integral part of the Freshwater School community.  The district provides K-6 bi-weekly instruction in music and dance, a chorus for grades 3-8, three levels of band, and world music electives for grades 7 and 8. Interested students may also explore the music of Trinidad and Tobago in the Freshwater Steel Drum Band. The Freshwater Jazz Comb includes 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, and emphasizes the thrilling process of jazz improvisation in this uniquely American art form. We enjoy playing at community events such as the Morris Graves Family Arts Day, Eureka and Arcata Arts Alive and at the Redwood Coast Dixieland Jazz Festival. We will be producing our third CD this month, and you can order your advance copy at this performance.
