He’s mean, he’s green and he’s mad. From the heart of the California Hills comes a close encounter of the prehistoric kind.
Ganjasaurus Rex (1987) is a pro-legalization science fiction monster movie shot in Humboldt County. A pot grower makes a really huge bunch of pot seeds (Cannabis Sequoia). She gives one to some friends who plant it next to what they think is a rock. The plants are special in that they grow the size of a Redwood and even look like one too. CAMP, the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, shows up and starts raiding farmers. The giant pot plant next to the “rock” wake up Ganjasaurus Rex who goes out looking for the smell by testing other pot plants, whether still in the ground or attached to CAMP helicopters. Soon the authorities figure out that a monster is on the loose. They seek a scientist that specializes in Ganjasaurus Rex research. The police set up their base in Garberville, Ca. The rest of the movie involves the pot growers being chased by CAMP and Ganjasaurus. Filmed in Shelter Cove, CA with the help of the pot farmers and the scientist.
Neither Bombs, Bullets, Jets or Rockets Can Stop Gorgo…But This Little Boy Knew His Secret!
Gorgo (1961) is a British giant monster movie and directed by Eugène Lourié, it tells the story of an underwater monster’s capture off the coast of Ireland. The story begins when underwater volcanic activity in the Irish Sea brings forth a 65-foot monster called Gorgo. Enterprising Joe (Bill Travers) and Sam (William Sylvester) capture the beast and transport it to London, where Gorgo is put on display as a seaside carnival attraction. This proves to be a major mistake when Gorgo’s even larger mother lumbers to the surface in search of her cute li’l baby. In short order, London is trampled and trashed. The special effects in Gorgo, provided by Tom Howard - two time Academy Award winner, are truly admirable. The monsters are quite ferocious - except when they wiggle their ear. “Good sci-fi story… Exciting special effects.” - Leonard Maltin
