Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County and Redwood Roots Farm present The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved!, a workshop about food and democracy, on Saturday, Sept.13th from 1-4 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public and will take place at Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside. No pre-registration is necessary.
Through interactive presentations and group discussion, the workshop challenges participants to think more critically about how food makes it to their tables. Topics for discussion include the history of corporate agribusiness and new initiatives to support local, healthy food in our communities.
"This is a perfect way to learn why events such as 'Local Food Month' are so important," said Shannon Tracey of Democracy Unlimited. "It's becoming very clear just how unhealthy the current globalized food system is, and that it has also come with unexpected social and economic costs. So thinking about the benefits of local food is part of what we'll explore in this workshop."
The workshop is part of Democracy Unlimited's Food and Democracy Project. Through the Project, Democracy Unlimited also partners with several area farms to bring Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to Eureka. Green Fire Farm, in Hoopa, and Pierce Family Farm, from Orleans, have both worked this season with Democracy Unlimited's CSA program to bring local produce to Eureka residents on a weekly basis. This year the program was filled to capacity, with a waiting list of potential members for each farm.
"CSA's are becoming more popular all across the country," said Megan Wade, who recently joined the Democracy Unlimited staff. "Not only are they an important step in moving past the destructive systems of corporate food production, but they also connect you to your food and to your neighbors in fun, new ways – like when you're all comparing the best ways to store or preserve the amazing amount of vegetables from your CSA share."
Join Democracy Unlimited and Redwood Roots Farm to imagine and plan a new future for Humboldt County food.
