Recreation Advisory Committee Meeting

What:

McKinleyville Community Services District (MCSD) is committed to recognizing the needs of residents in McKinleyville.  Over the course of the last several years, Hiller Park (West of the Hammond Trail) has become a popular destination for dog owners all over Humboldt County.  McKinleyville’s “unofficial dog park” is the only one of its kind in this area.

Recognizing the needs of dog owners, the Recreation Advisory Committee has held several public meetings to discuss building a potential dog park.  After several meetings and discussions with community members, the Committee voted unanimously to recommend to the MCSD Board of Directors to build a fenced in dog park at Hiller Park by using Quimby Coastal Park Dedication Funds.

The concern of allowing dogs to run off-leash at Hiller Park has been discussed several times over the course of the last ten years.  The Recreation Advisory Committee’s decision is not based on recent events, but rather it is based on multiple correspondences from Hiller Park users.  The ultimate goal of MCSD is to make Hiller Park accessible and safe to all park users.

As a next step, the Recreation Advisory Committee will host a meeting on May 27, 2010 at 6:30 pm at the MCSD office to gather public input for ideas on the construction of a dog park.  This meeting is open to the public and we welcome your input.  After staff and the RAC consider ideas and suggestions, the item will be brought to the MCSD Board of Directors for final approval, probably at its June 16, 2010 meeting.
