Queer Prom: A Tribute to Queer Icons

What:

The RAVEN Project invites all LGBTQ youth, the queer community, and allies to the Queer Prom: “A tribute to Queer Icons” on Saturday April 17th, 2010. Youth who hang out and work at the RAVEN Project created Queer Prom during a laugher filled brainstorming session after noting there are few opportunities for the under 21 set to go out dance, have fun, and socialize. Get into the spirit and come as your favorite queer icon – whether it’s Judy Garland, Cher, Madonna, or Lady Gaga. “All I want to do is dance … and dress up like Madonna” exclaimed one RAVEN regular.

RAVEN Project’s Queer Prom is Saturday April 17th 2010 at The Eureka Veterans Memorial Building on H & 10th Streets in Eureka. In addition to a live DJ and dancing, there will be a costume contest, and prom photos! Sliding scale admission fee is 25 cents to $5.00 if you are under 21 and $5.00 to $10.00 for those 21 and over. This RAVEN Project Fundraiser is a drug, alcohol & hate free event. On a serious note, almost 30% of LGBTQ Youth are disowned by unaccepting parents and become homeless.

The RAVEN Project is a youth led, street outreach program and drop-in center for youth ages 10 to 21 that are homeless, runaway, traveling, disenfranchised, street, or at risk. Free services include: linkages to local youth resources and shelter, peer counseling, harm reduction education, resume and job finding assistance, birth Certificate and photo ID assistance, school registration assistance, computer/internet and phone use, showers, meals, laundry, used clothing, blankets/sleeping bags, safer sex supplies, first aid supplies, basic toiletries, and positive social groups – Queer coffee House, Girls Space, Art Group, and Music& Drum Circle. A program of Redwood Community Action Agency and the Youth Service Bureau - the RAVEN Project has been serving Humboldt County Youth since 1995 -and can be found on MySpace and Facebook.
