What:
*The *Playhouse Family Fun Series 2010 kicks off an exciting lineup of family entertainment with Stories from Latin America with Bay Area storyteller Olga Loya. This outstanding show celebrates the magic of los cuentos (stories) with folk tales about self image, personal stories about discovering of one’s own culture and myths from long ago that help us to understand the present. Loya brings to life stories from the barrio of east Los Angeles to the many countries of Latin America, incorporating words, drum chants and song.
Latina storyteller and author Olga Loya uses a dramatic mix of Spanish and English to share traditional tales from Latin American as well as stories from her own varied and colorful life growing up in East Los Angeles. Olga Loya was captivated by the vivid stories her Mexican grandmother and father would tell. Absorbing all of their secrets and following the tendrils of memory that bind people and families, Olga fashioned and invented for herself a stirring universe of creation. With her poetic eloquence Olga’s stories are an impassioned quest to keep alive not only the fabric of her family but the larger Latino culture, richly robed in folktales, ancient myths and history
Known internationally and described as an “alchemist” who can conjure up images and fill them with life, her shows are bursting with color and passion. Stories inspired by legend and current headlines, reality and dreams, ancient myths and personal experience, healing stories and tales of extraordinary women are shared with imagination and exuberance as Loya uses her voice, body and sometimes music and dance to draw her audience into the imaginative and surprising worlds of the tales she tells.
