People Power Videos To Be Screened At Mateel This Friday, February 19th

This Friday, February 19th, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present a variety of “people power” videos for the February edition of the Mateel film series.  The event will feature the world premier of local filmmaker, Andy Caffrey’s, Welcome To The Rendezvous, along with the short films, Action At Climate Ground Zero, and The Democratic Promise: Saul Alinsky & His Legacy.

Andy Caffrey’s *Welcome To The Rendezvous * will be the evening’s feature film and the filmmaker will be on hand to premiere the world’s first documentary to cover Earth First! music, eco-warrior poetry, and general entertainment mayhem. Over twenty years in the making, Welcome To The Rendezvous presents a virtual Earth First! Woodstock, compiled from six years of filming between 1988 and 1994. Musicians featured include Dana Lyons, Bill Oliver & Glen Waldeck, Alice DiMicele, Joanne Rand, Bruce Cockburn, Walkin’ Jim Stoltz, Dakota Sid, Darryl Cherney & Judi Bari, Lone Wolf Circles, Robert Hoyt, Matthew Haun, Dennis Fritzinger, The Wallys, Peg Millett & Dick Business, all purveyors of a style the filmmaker refers to as Gaiabilly!

Action At Climate Ground Zero is a seven-minute short video produced by Climate Ground Zero which documents their current direct action campaign in West Virginia to permanently stop mountaintop removal coal mining. This is the same video Earth First!, Rainforest Action Network, and Ruckus Society co-founder, Mike Roselle, brought through town a few months back and this screening will also include the latest news on their campaign.

The Democratic Promise: Saul Alinsky & His Legacy documents the founder of community organizing, Chicago’s Saul Alinsky. Alinsky is most recently known because President Obama’s activist career began with the Saul Alinsky training program. Alinksy organized and taught organizing to the poorest of the poor, beginning with the stockyard workers written about in Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. This video takes you through the civil rights movement, urban affordable housing campaigns, and many other diverse campaigns. There is no better film showing how people get and exercise political power at the community level.

Doors open at 7:00pm with the first film starting at 7:30pm.  Admission is free, although a suggested donation of $5 is requested at the door to help cover expenses.  A variety of snack foods, popcorn, desserts, beer, wine, and refreshments will be available.  For more information contact the Mateel Community Center at 923-3368 or visit www.mateel.org.
