My Man Godfrey (1936) screens Sunday, June 28, at 4 p.m. 6:05 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Arcata Theatre Lounge, 1036 G St in Arcata. Box office opens 15 minutes prior to screening. Matinees before 6 p.m. are $4 and movies starting after 6 p.m. cost $5.
My Man Godfrey is a comedy film released in 1936, directed by Gregory LaCava, and In 1999 was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The definitive screwball comedy, My Man Godfrey follows the madcap antics of a wealthy and eccentric family when they hire a down and out “forgotten man” as their butler. My Man Godfrey features brilliant performances by Carole Lombard and William Powell and was the first film to receive Academy Award® nominations in all four acting categories.
As a side note, director LaCava, a former animator and freelancer for most of his film career, held studio executives in contempt, and was known to be a bit eccentric. When he and Powell hit a snag over a disagreement about how Godfrey should be portrayed, they settled things over a bottle of Scotch. The next morning, LaCava showed up for shooting with a headache, but Powell didn’t appear. Instead, he sent a telegram stating: “WE MAY HAVE FOUND GODFREY LAST NIGHT BUT WE LOST POWELL. SEE YOU TOMORROW.”
