Mushroom Fair

What:

Wild mushrooms are thought of as poisonous pests by some and gourmet delicacies by many. They play an essential role in the web of life of our forests and are found in every ecological niche from sheet rock in damp bathrooms to the sands of deserts. Learn more about the fascinating fungi growing in our area by attending the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society’s thirty second annual Mushroom Fair from 11:00 to 4:00 on Sunday Nov. 20, 2011.

The Northcoast is one of the premier habitats in the United States for fungi. There will be as many as 350 species displayed. They will be arranged educationally by family and spore color. Mushrooms are beautiful and colorful and the Fair is a great opportunity for photography.

Other displays will feature edible and toxic fungi, mushrooms used for dying wool and educational posters on the biology and ecology of fungi. There will be sales of mushroom books, cultivation kits, microscopes, and photographs. This year there will T shirts for sale with the design a beautiful watercolor of a local mushroom by Hortense Lanphere.

The public is encouraged to bring their mushrooms for identification.
