Museum’s 10th Anniversary

What:

*Join the Humboldt Arts Council for the Morris* *Graves* *Museum* of Art 10th Anniversary Kick Off Celebration

On January 1st, 2000 the Humboldt Arts Council opened the doors to the Morris Graves Museum of Art in the Historic Carnegie Library. On January 2nd, 2010 a year-long celebration of the first 10 years of service to the community will kick off with a fanfare performance by the Scotia Brass Quintet. Celebrating their 75th season as well, the Scotia Band has been Humboldt County’s community band since 1935 and will be performing to begin a full year of celebrations for both of these important anniversaries. Ramone’s Bakery will be providing Anniversary Cake, and a variety of archival memorabilia will be on display exploring the history of the Humboldt Arts Council and the Morris Graves Museum of Art. Also making its debut is the most recent acquisition to the HAC Permanent Collection, a painting of the Morris Graves Museum of Art by Jim McVicker. McVicker spent many mornings this past October outside of the MGMA creating the painting that is truly a spectacular interpretation of the Museum. Also on view is a photograph by William Pierson depicting Jim McVicker painting onsite at the Museum. The community is invited to take part in this momentous event and come out prior to Arts Alive to celebrate.

In 1996 the Humboldt Arts Council accepted an offer from the City of Eureka to undertake the effort to save the historic 1904 Carnegie Library building, which was destined for demolition. The former Carnegie Library had been a symbol of community pride and local culture for over 100 years. After the successful Carnegie Capital Campaign to raise $1.5 million from the local community, foundations and corporations, the Council began the restoration process in 1999 to convert the historic Carnegie building into a regional art museum and art center. On January 1, 2000 the Humboldt Arts Council and the community celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the Morris Graves Museum of Art for its new “Century of Service” to the community.

The Museum today houses seven galleries including a Courtyard Sculpture Garden, a Museum Store, classroom facilities, an Arts Resource Center and a Performance Rotunda, and each month, Eureka’s Arts Alive! brings an average of 2,500 community members to the Museum to enjoy musical performances and art exhibits.
