What:
Democracy Unlimited sponsors an interactive community forum to facilitate Humboldt’s response to the recent Citizens United decision. “Over 60,000 Americans, horrified by what this Court ruling means, have come together with DUHC in a broad coalition of diverse communities, groups, and national organizations,” said Democracy Unlimited’s Meghan Murphy.
“DUHC has been at the forefront of launching ‘The Campaign to Legalize Democracy,’ a true grassroots movement to amend the Constitution to restore the power of people over corporations *beyond* election law,” remarked Jon Zaglin of Democracy Unlimited. “It is time to amend our Constitution to make it clear that only living persons have inalienable human rights protected by the Constitution. It is illegitimate to allow corporations to use ‘corporate personhood’ to overturn any democratically enacted laws.”
DUHC invites residents to join them and the “Campaign to Legalize Democracy” on February 20th from 3 to 6 p.m. “Together, we will design our community’s actions to forward the national democracy movement and take control of our lives and our government,” said Grant Skoglund, recent graduate of HSU and member of DUHC’s Steering Committee. “True social movements do not ask, ‘What is possible within the existing political and economic power systems?’ The moment is here for Humboldt to offer guidance to the national uproar, to state our goals clearly and boldly, to effectively organize ourselves for action, and to force the existing power structure to address us.”
