The Master Throat Singers of Tuva

What:

This Friday, April 16th, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present a special concert by Chirgilchin, The Master Throat Singers of Tuva.  Performing traditional music from their homeland of Tuva, a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia, the vocalists of Chirgilchin are among the most accomplished throat singers in the world and are recognized as a cultural treasure around the globe.

Playing music that is atmospheric, mesmeric, and rollicking at the same time, the phenomenon of throat singing is difficult to describe in words and is one of the few ancient folk musical styles that have garnered great Western attention in recent years.  Produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, these amazing vocalists are simultaneously able to create a middle note and haunting flute-like harmonic for an effect that has to be experienced to truly believe.

Featuring Igor Koshkendey and Mongoun-Ool Ondar, both champions of the Grand Prix International Competition of Throat Singing, the vocalists of Chirgilchin are masters of all six throat singing styles and perform with traditional Tuvan instrumental accompaniment.  These instruments, which are handmade by Aldar Tamdyn, the third member of Chirgilchin and winner of the coveted title of Best Instrumentalist at Tuva’s International Folk Music Festival, include the doshpuluur (a kind of lute with two strings), igil (a bowed fiddle with two strings), and dungur (a rattle drum used by Tuvan shamans).  The combination of this ancient instrumentation with Chirgilchin’s other-worldly multi-phonic vocal abilities, make for an awe-inspiring performance and, as a special treat, this Chirgilchin performance will also include master female throat singer, Aidysmaa Koshkendey, who also plays the khomus (Tuvan mouth harp), tenchik (bells), and various percussion instruments.

Admission is at the door only and is priced at $22 for MCC members and $24 general.  Doors open at 7pm with a gourmet Mongolian dinner of seared beef with ginger, garlic, and scallions or spicy eggplant, plus garlic/ sesame pole beans, and Jasmine rice.  A selection of fine wines, beers, desserts, and refreshments will also be available for purchase.  The concert will begin at 8pm.  For more information, contact the Mateel Community Center at 923-3368 or visit www.mateel.org and don’t miss the master throat singers of Chirgilchin at the Mateel this Friday, April 16th.
