Mandala Workshop

What:

In memory of Morris Graves, the Humboldt Arts Council is offering an artist workshop focusing on art as meditation.

Born on August 28th, 1910 this year would have been Graves 100th birthday. Come celebrate the life of Morris Graves by enjoying an afternoon drawing Mandalas as a tool for meditation and taping into your own inner eye. It has been said that many of Morris Graves’ paintings sprang from visions received in meditation.

It might be more accurate to say that for Graves, painting was itself a meditative process. Graves’ paintings and sculptures illuminate his passions for the study of Asian philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and the writings of Carl Jung, creating what he called “visions of the inner eye.”

Janice Sharman-Hand is a local artist and art educator. Janice was introduced to Carl Jung and his practice of drawing Mandalas to discover unknown parts of his sub consciousness as a way of enhancing his personal growth while taking a Women’s Psychology class at Humboldt State University. Since then, Janice has turned to creating Mandalas as a form of meditation. She has presented Mandala workshops to the College of the Redwoods Early Childhood Development Staff and to the University of Phoenix for Teacher Professional Development.

This workshop is for the beginner to intermediate artist. Basic art materials will be provided.
