Local Government and the Low-Carbon Future

What:

Join HSU’s Department of Politics for the eighth annual Victor T. Schaub Memorial Lecture on Local Politics: “Can We Get There From Here? Local Government and the Low-Carbon Future.”

This year’s event will be a panel discussion exploring the challenges of local planning for a low-carbon future. Both severe weather events and more expensive and scarce energy supplies are likely scenarios in the not-too-distant future, yet governments are finding it difficult to address these issues in the planning process due to political and financial pressures.

Panelists will be George Williamson, owner and principal planner at Planwest Partners and executive officer of the Humboldt County Local Agency Formation Commission; Matthew Marshall, executive director of the Redwood Coast Energy Authority; Phillip Smith Hanes, Humboldt County chief administrative officer; and Melanie Williams, HSU Politics Department lecturer and active-transportation specialist.

The panelists will report on the current status of planning and suggest ways of building resilience in both short- and long-term planning.

Refreshments will be provided.
