With his gravelly baritone and omnipresent fedora, dark glasses and Groucho Marx mustache, Leon Redbone is one of the more distinct and recognizable characters in popular music. Always the musical iconoclast, this neo-vaudeville crooner takes mostly pre-World War II songs and imbues them with his own distinctive, unique style and humor. After eleven albums, he continues to capture and promote the essence of what popular music used to be, long before sophisticated recording techniques such as multiple tracks and overdubbing became standard practice. Redbone manages to keep these classic songs sounding fresh while staying surprisingly true to the period from which they were first produced.
