Ladyfest Northwest is part of a tradition of grassroots-organized festivals showcasing the talents of women artists. The first Ladyfest took place in Olympia, WA in 2000. It was a woman-organized event with music, art, workshops, and panels featuring female bands and artists. The original event raised over $30,000 for women’s charities and motivated women around the US and in Europe to start their own Ladyfests. Ladyfest Northwest is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization to both showcase women’s artistic expression and share ideas through a series of performances, films and public arts. Proceeds of the events and the drawing will benefit local women’s organization, Humboldt Domestic Violence Services. The intent is to create awareness and education regarding women’s issues and to support organizations fighting to improve the status of women worldwide as well as next door. Ladyfest Northwest is scheduled to take place Friday, April 30th through Sunday, May 2nd, 2010. There are over a dozen bands traveling from all over the north west to perform here.
Thank you so much! We look forward to hearing your response!
Sincerely,
Courtney Jackson & Aimee Taylor

“Ash Reiter is a delightful young talent with already well-developed songwriting skills. Her voice could be compared to any number of familiar names, Zooey Deschanel or Jolie Holland being the most readily available, but it is a sign of her gifts that she really doesn’t benefit from comparison to anyone. Behind her vintage, lipstick-red National, she drives familiar yet distinct pop songs in a voice that, if anything, is stronger live than on her recordings. In her smoky blend of retro pop and modernism, sincerity and ironic detachment, her music brought to mind Sondre Lerche at several points. The tuneful nature of her compositions and the balance of wit and honesty in her voice are thoroughly winning.”

Romanteek hails from Olympia, Washington, where they’ve cultivated their heart throbbing dance jams since 2001. Romanteek titles a new chapter in Olympia, Washington’s brilliant DIY musical history. The infectious hooks and driving beats sound somewhere between “Remain in Light” era Talking Heads and the funky stylings of Prince, and convey one solid message: all of life’s problems can be worked out on the dance floor. Imagine yourself in one of Olympia’s beloved punk house basements, crowded in with ten dozen people as diverse as the collection of show fliers on the wall. In a far corner the five members of Romanteek touch their representative fingers together in a pre-show ritual of love and unity, before unleashing a surprising dark disco rhythm on the room. The opening guitar melody is quick and hypnotizing, supported by brooding electric piano, a solid uhn-dit bass line and the clear, powerful drumming of Heather Dunn’s deft hands. The radiant Ruby Valentine stands center stage. With fresh flowers in her hair and a mischievous smile on her face, Valentine emanates all of the sultry sexuality of a 1940’s lounge singer. She sways with the music, and with the silky-molasses vibrato of her voice croons of the conflict and frustration of life, of love, and the inevitability of death. The crowd starts to move with more urgency as the song gains momentum, and so does Valentine. Bent over and belting into the mic with raging soul, the lady declares, “well I think I might be strung too tightly,” before taking her pants off and rocking down to the floor with her tambourine. By the time the show is over, you are breathless, sweaty and invigorated, and Romanteek has done their job.
