Kids’ Ocean Day Beach Cleanup

What:

What: The 18th Annual Kids’ Ocean Day Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup will be taking place in Humboldt County for approximately 1,000 elementary students.  In preparation for the event, Friends of the Dunes has been conducting classroom presentations to teach the students about the fragile nature of native sand dune habitat and the importance of the ocean and how their actions affect it.

After a beach cleanup and removal of non-native dune grasses, they will “take a stand in the sand” and form a huge human design depicting a salmon and letters spelling out the message, “Coexist” referring to the need for people to change our pollution-creating behaviors and prevent trash from flowing into the oceans.  Similar events are taking place at five other locations all along the California coast.

When:    Thursday, June 9th, in honor of World Oceans Day on June 8th.
               Litter cleanup & non-native grass removal: 9 a.m. to 11:30 am.
               Aerial art formation:  12:30.

Where:    South Spit of the Humboldt Bay on Hookton Road south of Eureka.  First exit off Highway 101 south of Exit 698 for College of the Redwoods.

Who:    The Kids’ Ocean Day Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup is organized locally by Friends of the Dunes, a community-based non-profit organization, along with the Bureau of Land Management Arcata Field office.  The program was created in 1994 by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education and is organized statewide by the California Coastal Commission.
