Jonathon Keats

What:

Visiting Artist Jonathon Keats Proposes To Vary Length Of Year Based On Regional Climate… Giant Sequoia To Be Given Local Timekeeping Authority… Monday Night Lecture Scheduled At The Accident Gallery In Eureka

Over the past several decades, global warming has brought climate change to Humboldt County. In response to this calamity, the College of the Redwoods will bring visiting artist Jonathon Keats to Eureka on April 19. According to sources at the college, Artist addresses the environmental spoilage by proposing to supplant the old-fashioned 365-day year in favor of a dynamic calendar determined by changes in local weather. Calibrated by measuring the future growth rate of a giant sequoia against the tree’s current annual increase in girth, the three-thousand-year calendar may be planted on the college campus as early as next autumn.

On April 19, Mr. Keats will discuss his proposal for Eureka as well as some of his past conceptual art projects, including a movie theater for house plants he recently opened in New York City, a ballet for honeybees he choreographed in San Francisco, and his attempts to genetically engineer God at UC Berkeley. “All of my projects are really thought experiments,” says Mr. Keats, who has often been called an experimental philosopher. “Through my work, I seek to observe the world in collaboration with other people - but the global ecosystem is too vast for us to contemplate as a species. Only a sequoia, with its 3,000-year lifespan, can begin to appreciate the implications of our everyday actions on a geological timescale.”
