Joanne Rand

What:

Dubbed “Psychedelic-Folk-Revival,” Joanne Rand and her band the Rhythm of the Open Hearts perform at Cecil’s New Orleans Bistro (773 Redwood Dr., Garberville, CA) on Friday, February 26th at 8PM.  Call 707-923-7007 for more info.
The show celebrates Rand’s tenth indie CD, “Snake Oil and Hummingbirds.” “Another soulful recording by Joanne,” writes renowned pianist George Winston. “Wonderful renditions also of the Old-Time songs.”
Joanne Rand got her start in the North Bay Area of California, where she remains revered as one of the region’s finest independent artists. A North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band,” and this year called Rand a “legendary…longtime local hero.”  The Santa Rosa Press Democrat said Rand’s music is “nothing short of brilliant.”
During the 1990’s Rand moved to Seattle where she helped to anchor the city’s thriving music scene.  She is now in Arcata, CA raising her young daughter, teaching, composing, and touring with her band (Brad Cox on drums, Ken Braziel on bass).
Rand’s music spans the human condition, drawing from a wide array of experience.  Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Rand has toured nationally for the past twenty years, appearing with such artists as Bonnie Raitt and Bob Weir, garnering “praise usually reserved for healers & saints” (Santa Cruz Good Times).  She recently earned a degree in Music Composition from Humboldt State University, in Arcata.
Rand’s latest album, Snake Oil and Hummingbirds (submitted for a Grammy nomination), is a masterwork of original and traditional convergence. Co-produced by acclaimed recording engineer Stephen Hart (David Bowie, Santana, The Neville Brothers, Titanic soundtrack), Snake Oil and Hummingbirds combines avant-garde Appalachian traditionals, original orchestral compositions and southern blues-rock, all sung in Rand’s inimitable style.  Her compositions have been compared to Aaron Copland and her voice dubbed “hair-raising” by Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gary Snyder. The title Snake Oil and Hummingbirds derives from the medicinal quality of Rand’s muse: some goes down easy (Hummingbirds); other tunes stir and stimulate (Snake Oil).  For more info on Rand visit: www.Myspace.com/JoanneRand  or sonicbids.com/JoanneRand2
