Jim Page and Joann Rand

What:

Homefire Productions presents a concert with two of the Northwest’s finest singer songwriters, Jim Page and Joanne Rand. The show is at Humbrews (856 10th  St.), in Arcata, Saturday, May 22nd at 8PM.  This one is not to be missed!   For information, call 826-2739.

Remember that old quote: “Art is not a mirror which reflects history, but a hammer which shapes it.” Songwriter Jim Page is that hammer; he epitomizes the artist who lives his craft, constantly synthesizing current events on both a personal and a global scale.  He speaks to our fears and hopes; he awakens our dreams.  Honored as an iconic musical genius by the greats of our time, he has been called: “The bastard son of Woody Guthrie” by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.  “If you’re ever going to get the message, this is the messenger to get it from” wrote the late, great Utah Phillips.  Bonnie Raitt counts herself  “a longtime admirer” and Christie Moore claims: “Jim Page carries the light.”

Jim began his career as a young man standing around college campuses and city street corners, making up songs on the fly about whoever happened to walk past.  Thirty years later, he has not lost his touch or his spontaneity.  He is the real thing!

Dubbed “Psychedelic-Folk-Revival,” longtime troubadour Joanne Rand recently released her tenth indie CD, Snake Oil and Hummingbirds (avant garde Appalachian traditionals and originals). “A work so layered and complex it’s hard to call it folk music with a straight face.  But at the core…Rand’s substantial, grounded songs remain.” -Eugene,OR Register Guard. “Another soulful recording by Joanne, wonderful renditions also of the Old-Time songs.” writes pianist George Winston. “ “A seasoned to perfection voice,” -Santa Cruz Weekly. “Still fierce, still insightful, wild and free for a long time to come.” -Eugene Weekly.

Joanne Rand got her start in the North Bay Area of California, where she remains revered as one of the region’s finest independent artists. A North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band,” and this year called Rand a “legendary…longtime local hero.” The Santa Rosa Press Democrat said Rand’s music is “nothing short of brilliant.”

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Rand has toured nationally for the past twenty-five years, appearing with such artists as Bonnie Raitt and Bob Weir. She will be joined by her band, The Rhythm of the Open Hearts: Robert Franklin on guitar, Brad Cox on drums and Ken Braziel on bass.
