Humboldt Crabs vs. Fairfield Indians
What:
Screw the Giants!
It always baffles me, the propensity for Humboldtians to root for Bay Area sports teams (well, specific sports teams altogether, but that’s another rant). Yes, I have been to my share of Giants and Warriors games, which is why I feel at liberty to raise the question. Can some one tell me where it is written that you must be a fan of the closest geographical professional team, even if they are 300 miles away? Do they somehow represent you better than, say, the team that is 700 miles away? It all seems rather arbitrary, but then again, so does much of professional sportsdom. If we’re pickin’ an MLB team to represent Humboldt, it seems like the Milwaukee Brewers would make as much, if not more, sense. Whatever.
But then again, what if you could run into your favorite ballplayer while buying organic beef at Wildberries? What if you could look him dead in the eye and say, “Way to fumble that grounder last night, rookie!”? What if he could fire back, “Sorry, I was tired from being out late with your daughter!”? Now that’s a down-home-kind-of-experience I can get behind. Well, Humboldt, it can be yours!
That’s right, it’s that time of year when Humboldt gets a case of the Crabs. The Humboldt Crabs will play nearly 40 home through August at Crabs Field in this their 66th year. The first game of the season is Saturday, Jun. 5, when the real hometown heroes will take on the embarrassingly politically incorrect Fairfield Indians in a double header with games at 12:30 and 7 p.m. The Indians will eat Crab again on Sunday, Jun. 6 at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for all Crabs games are $7, $5 for students and seniors and $3 for kids. A small price for the great American Pastime.
If you want to really call yourself a Crab superfan, you’ll also want to check out the Season Opening Dinner that takes place at the Arcata Community Center at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jun. 4. This is your chance to meet and greet with players and give them the batting advice your father gave you while they smile politely and nod. Tickets are are available at Ray’s Food Place and Arcata City Hall only $20, $15 for fans under 12. Quite the deal.
You wanna talk about getting your money’s worth? Last year, those “badass” Giants finished above .500 (88-74) for the first time in five years while still failing to make the playoffs. This year, their on track to make about the same (non) impact. Compare that to last years Crabs record of 48-11 (.814!). Do you really want to drive five hours (that’s a tank of gas each way) to spend $10 on a hotdog and watch the “home team” lose? I’ve heard that that experience is something of a shame. So, screw the Giants! Get Crabs!
