Humboldt Bay Symposium

This year’s biennial event will host speakers on April 22-23 and a poster session at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 23 at the Wharfinger building in Eureka.

The Thursday, April 22 keynote speakers are Rollin C. Richmond, President of Humboldt State University and Skyli McAfee, Executive Director of the Ocean Science Trust.

Saturday, April 24th will be a Day by the Bay which will include free and family friendly activities throughout Arcata and Eureka.

This year’s welcome address will be delivered by Roy Curless, President of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District Board of Commissioners. The symposium will cover diverse topics including habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, the Marine Life Protection Act, transportation, economic development, invasive species management and the effects of climate change on Humboldt Bay. The Symposium will feature over 30 speakers, including experts from local, state and federal agencies as well as academia.

The Day by the Bay will feature events throughout Arcata and Eureka that highlight the many ways we use the Bay. The Discovery Museum will be doing a Wind, Water and Weather interactive exhibit, while free boat tours will be provided by the Humboldt Baykeeper. Families are encouraged to visit the free Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) Expo at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds or volunteer at Sequoia Park doing Invasive Plant and Trash Removal hosted by the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project and the Humboldt Fish Action Council. There will also be guided nature hikes around the Bay.

This year’s Humboldt Bay Symposium is dedicated to the memory of Scott Quackenbush of Humboldt State University and Samantha Price of the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project.

A few years ago, the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District institutionalized an event that had a sporadic history dating back to the mid-1960s called the Humboldt Bay Symposium. The Harbor District took leadership of this event and has obligated itself to put on a Humboldt Bay Symposium every even numbered year. The District’s purpose for the Symposium is to give all those that are interested a snapshot of all the current event happening in and around Humboldt Bay including habitat restoration projects, transportation projects, research projects, fisheries issues, commercial and industrial updates and others.
