Historical Luncheon

What:

Chris Peters, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indian Development, will be the featured speaker at the Humboldt County Historical Society’s Fiftieth Annual Luncheon on Sunday, February 21, at 12:30 p.m. in the Elks Lodge, Eureka. Everyone is invited.

Yurok Chris Peters speaks on “The Social, Cultural, and Ceremonial Renaissance of North Coast Tribes.” Peters, who is Yurok, will discuss the importance of the revitalization of Native cultures and ceremonies, including World Renewal Ceremonies, and the applications such ceremonies have to our lives today and to future generations.

A graduate of the University of California at Davis and of Stanford University, Chris Peters has been with the Seventh Generation Fund for twenty years. The nonprofit Seventh Generation Fund, which offers wide-ranging support to indigenous grassroots communities throughout the Americas, takes its name from a precept of the Great Law of Peace of the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy. This precept requires that chiefs consider the impact of their decisions on the seventh generation yet to come.

As we look to a future of climate change and less reliance on fossil fuel, explains Peters, there is a serious need for transformative thinking, not only here on the North Coast, but worldwide. From a Native perspective, the importance of World Renewal Ceremonies, and of ceremony in general, will be a key aspect of such transformation. If we look to them, historic philosophies and Native paradigms suggest paths for the future.

Join Chris Peters for a look at the cultural renaissance unfolding among North Coast tribes, and Native perspectives on renewal, at the Humboldt County Historical Society’s Fiftieth Annual Luncheon, on February 21.

The afternoon with Chris Peters will include a buffet luncheon, with vegetarian options available, the presentation of the Historical Society’s annual history award, and a silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $25 per person. Reservations for the popular luncheon will be accepted through Thursday, February 18. For more information or to make a reservation, please call the Humboldt County Historical Society at 445-4342.
