What:
The first concert of the “Sundays at 4” summer programs presented by the Christ Church Concert Series will be on June 27, 4 pm, at Christ Episcopal Church (15th and H Streets). Hidden Treasures: Selected Organ Works by Women Composers will be presented by Merry Phillips, organist. The program will include music by European and American composers from the 17th, 19th, and 20th-centuries and feature composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (who wrote her own wedding music), Elfrida Andree (who successfully fought against the sexism that barred women from professional work as organists in 19th-century Sweden), as well as other composers with equally interesting stories to be told. A piece by French composer Cecile Chaminade will be performed with flutist Nancy Streufert. The concert is free and open to the public.
