Falk: the Beginning and End of the Elk River Company Town

What:

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Park Ranger Julie Clark presents “Falk: the Beginning and End of the Elk River Company Town,” at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting on Saturday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

Founded in 1884 by lumber entrepreneur Noah Falk, the town of Falk was built on the South Fork of the Elk River and was home to four hundred Humboldters during its heyday, with cookhouses, bachelor cabins, family homes, general store, post office, and a dance hall. Falk endured as a company town until 1937, when the mills closed. By 1940 only twelve residents remained, and before long, Falk had become a ghost town.

BLM Park Ranger Julie Clark presents this fascinating history through a slide show of Falk through time, from its conception to the ghost town period, with many historic photos of the town and its residents. There remain many clues to the once thriving town: exotic ornamental species mark home fronts and entrance paths; historic orchards remain, as do many antique artifacts. Clark leads tours and field trips out to the Falk site. For those who cannot get out to the site, this program will be a great opportunity to see what it’s all about.
