Haiti/Chile Fundraiser

What:

As the extent of the devastation both Haiti and Chile are facing after their earthquakes continues to unfold, Humboldt County continues to show their generosity through a variety of fundraisers. The latest addition to the variety of events benefiting those affected by these tragic events is an Estate Sale being held by the Episcopal Christ Church on Saturday, March 27th.

The congregation decided they could not stand by while so many suffered. They have already sent donations into Haiti, but were moved to do more for both suffering countries.

“As a 7.0 earthquake rocked Haiti, suddenly our 6.5 quake was put into perspective.  And, at the same time, we could resonate with the fear, grief, loss and the realization of we have no control over this,” said Reverend Ron W. Griffin, Rector of Christ Church.

While exploring the best way they could help those in need, Father Ron made contact with Father Walin, who pastors 13 churches as well as an orphanage in the small community of Hinche, just outside of Port-au-Prince in Haiti.

“We have a great need, as those from Port-au-Prince are coming to Hinche and are in need of clothes, food, and supplies. So, in the short term, we are asking for money in order to have the most flexibility in reaching out to those in need,” says Father Walin.

Within Christ Church, members began planning how they could raise additional funds to send to help those in need. While the estate sale had originally been planned as an internal sale focused on raising funds to replace Christ Church’s earthquake damaged office chimney, members didn’t feel that they could focus on their own needs when there was such loss and need in Haiti and parts of Chile.

Anne Pierson, one of the event organizers, has suggestions for those who are interested in helping with the sale. “Find those nice dishes, silver, glassware, furniture, and other small or large items you don’t use but that are too good to give for a rummage sale. We all have those estate quality items tucked away in cabinets, attics or drawers that we don’t know what do with, or the items we’ve regretted having purchased or received from a well-meaning friend or relative. This is the perfect way to free ourselves of clutter and help people in the process.”

For those who are interested in purchasing items, the sale will be held on Saturday, March 3/27 from 9 am to 4 pm in the Christ Church Parish Hall. The Hall is located at 15th & H Streets, Eureka. Use the 15th Street entrance to access the sale.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to benefit those in need in Haiti and Chile. Funds will be donated directly to Father Walin in Haiti, and will be donated to the Chile Earthquake Fund that has been started by USPG (a supporting organization of the Angelican Churches). You can find more about how donated funds will be used through the Christ Church website: www.christchurcheureka.org or through the USPG website: www.uspg.org.uk.
