Farmers and gardeners interested in organic grain and vegetable seed production have the opportunity to learn important skills.
Organic Seed Alliance and Shakefork Community Farm host a seed and grain field day in Carlotta, CA, on October 3rd for farmers, gardeners, and other interested members of the community. Registration requested but not required. The field day will be from 12:30PM to 4:30PM and include:
Grain production, harvesting, and processing, including a tour of the barn and equipment; Vegetable seed production, harvesting, processing, and storage; Techniques for do-it-yourself plant breeding; and Information about Organic Seed Alliance and local seed systems;
There is a suggested donation of $5 - 10. Jack-o-lantern pumpkins are available for purchase from the Shakefork pumpkin patch.
Shakefork Community Farm is located at 7914 Highway 36. From Highway 101, go about 7.5 miles east on Highway 36. The driveway is on the right just before the new Carlotta Fire Station. Look for the yellow diamond shaped sign with a black fire truck on it and the mailbox marked with the street address. Follow the gravel road straight back, over the creek, and to the farm, and then park as directed.
