Ghoulies and Ghosties and Long-Legged Beasties

What:

Most people who choose to celebrate St.Patrick’s Day do so by visiting their local eating and drinking establishments, quaffing green beer, and enjoying the Irish music, songs, and hospitality that the Emerald Isle is famous for, to sounds of raucous laughter. But there is a darker side to the celebration, for among the many treasures Ireland is justifiably famous for are its haunted castles and landscapes, ancient graveyards, and wandering ghosts and spirits.

The Banshee walks the land, along with other creatures of myth and magic, including the Gray Man, the Pookas, and the Coach-a-Bower, or Death Coach. The two creators of the most famous vampires in history, Sheridan Le Fanu (“Carmilla”) and Bram Stoker (“Dracula”) both count Ireland as their birthplace. And Ireland claims many actual haunted locations such as The Dublin Hellfire Club on Montpelier Hill and Charleville Castle, a dreadful, death-filled place complete with dungeon.

Irish music has always had a somber and melancholy shading under the apparent gaiety, and storytelling is a fine and welcome tradition celebrated in Irish pubs, theaters, sitting rooms, and any place that a good crowd gathers for company and comfort against the cold March evenings.

If you have an urge to explore the eerier aspects of St. Patrick’s Day (including a few events that feature the venerable Saint himself), then join us at Mantova’s Two Street Music on Saturday, March 20th, for an evening of ghostly tales and legends, accompanied by delightful Celtic music from some of the Lost Coast’s most talented musicians. The evening will be hosted by Humboldt County’s resident wandering spectre and storyteller, Carpathian, and will feature Seabury Gould and Judy Hageman, both of whom have worked with the Celtic quartet, Scatter The Mud, and whom also play for other local musical events and organizations.

Carpathian has appeared at numerous venues, film festivals, Renaissance Faires, haunted attractions, libraries and conventions throughout the United States, including I-CON on Long Island NY, NETHERWORLD Haunted House in Atlanta GA, and MONSTER BASH outside Pittsburgh PA. He was also a recurring presence for ten years at The Six Flags America FRIGHT FEST in Largo, MD. In 2003 Carpathian was nominated for a Rondo Hatton Award for Special Presentation; he has also been nominated by the Horror Writers Association in 2002 for Outstanding Media Presentation for his CD 3 TALES OF CARPATHIAN.

Seabury Gould is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and music teacher. He performs on the guitar, bamboo flute, Irish bouzouki, piano, percussion and the Indian vina. He plays solo and with other musicians in a variety of styles including Irish and other Celtic traditional music, contemporary folk, classical music of India, blues, and ‘Good oldies’ with a specialty in Beatles songs. Seabury has studied World Music extensively, and has made musical journeys to Ireland, Bali, Bolivia, and Bhutan. He lived in India for two years, and has studied with master teachers such as Ali Akbar Khan and Dr. K. Subramaniam. He currently leads the popular local Celtic band, Scatter The Mud.

Judy Hageman is a very talented local fiddler who has been actively involved with the Humboldt Music scene as both a solo performer and band member. She has been involved with the Humboldt Folklife Society and the Humboldt Folklife Festival, where she shares her love of traditional and contemporary bluegrass and Celtic music, and has organized open jams and music circles in various venues around the Lost Coast. She is a former member of Scatter The Mud, and currently plays with her bluegrass band, Freshwater.

Mantova’s Two Street Music has a new featured music venue that showcases local performers, bands and musicians most Saturday evenings. Mantova’s Two Street Music was founded September of 2009; located in beautiful Old Town Eureka, Mantova’s Two Street Music’s misson statement is to become the central hub for music in Humboldt County, Northern California and Southern Oregon.
