The Future of Humboldt’s Sustainability: Can We be a World Model?

What:

The Humboldt Bay Center for Sustainable Living and the Redwood Coast Energy Authority will hold a free workshop, “The Future of Humboldt’s Sustainability: Can We be a World Model?” presented by Lonny Grafman, as part of CHANGES & CHOICES—A Monthly Program on How to Green Up Our Life, starting at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at the Redwood Coast Energy Resource Center, 517 5th Street, in Eureka (between F &G).
Grafman will talk about various cities, including a few in Humboldt, that have come together to promote sustainability in water usage, energy, transportation community building, local food and agriculture development, and physical resources which include forestry, land use and fisheries.  The evening will include a discussion on how Humboldt can become more sustainable.

Grafman is an Instructor of Environmental Resources Engineering and Appropriate Technology at Humboldt State University, and is an advisor to the Campus for Appropriate Technology (CCAT) at HSU.  He is the founder and President of The Appropedia Foundation, a world renowned “wiki” that shares knowledge to build rich, sustainable environments and lives. He is also the co-founder and an instructor in a summer abroad, full immersion, Spanish language and appropriate technology program in Parras, Mexico. Most recently Grafman, was the advisor to the Waterpod Project, an experimental sustainability project in New York. In addition he is the executive editor of the International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering.

Grafman recently presented programs on similar sustainability subjects in New York, Portland, Oregon and Columbia, Missouri.

His work with Appropedia and the Waterpod has been highlighted in Nature Magazine, Inhabitat, the North Coast Journal, EcoTech, MediaSquat Radio and network TV.
This program is provided by the educational arm of the Humboldt Bay Center for Sustainable Living (HBCSL).  HBCSL is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to explore and demonstrate, through experiential living, a wide range of sustainable and ecologically sound technologies and ways of life.  Its principal project is the development of the Humboldt Bay Eco-Hostel.  More information on this project may be found at www.eco-hostel.org.
