Free Earth Day Lecture

What:

The City of Arcata invites the public to attend a lecture commemorating the 40 th anniversary of EarthDay at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, 569 South G Street. In*Midway Atoll: A Bird’s Eye View from Inside the Pacific Garbage Patch, lecturer Greg Goldsmithshowcases the wildlife of Midway Atoll and describes the impact of floating garbage on this remotecoral atoll and famous World War II battle site in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Goldsmithconnects this worldwide problem to local actions we can take to find solutions.Midway Atoll is located 3,020 miles from Arcata but our trash still has an impact on its wildlife andenvironment. Ocean currents, or gyres, in the northeast Pacific are impacted with marine plastics. Theexact size of these “islands” of litter is unknown, with estimates ranging from the size of Texas to thesize of the continental United States.Greg Goldsmith has been a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the last 23 years. Hejust fulfilled an assignment as Deputy Manager at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge duringthe summer of 2009 and received a first-hand look at the Pacific gyre and its payload of trash. Heworked previously on terrestrial and aquatic wildlife issues involving Pacific salmon, northern spottedowl, marbled murrelet, tidewater goby and others. Goldsmith completed a B.A. in Biology fromHumboldt State University in 1986.Refreshments will be served at the lecture. Please help the City make this a zero waste event by bringingyour own glass or cup.For more information, please contact the City of Arcata Environmental Services Department at (707)822-8184 or eservices@cityofarcata.org*
