Fourth Friday Flicks: Swept Away

movies

Fourth Friday Flicks takes a break this month from Billy Wilder films and swerves to Lena Wertmuller's Swept Away (1974), an Italian satirical social drama of class conflict. A wealthy, beautiful socialite (Mariangela Melato) becomes marooned on a tiny Mediterranean island alone with a working class sailor (Giancarlo Giannini). Does the class dynamic of exploiter and exploited stay the same or does the extreme situation force a change of power in the relationship? What would Karl Marx do? In Italian with English subtitles. This film is unrated. Audience members should be advised that there is frank adult language and discussion of sexual activities and situations in the film. Refreshments, popcorn, beer and wine available. Donations accepted.
