Sundays at Four

What:

The final concert of the summer ‘Sundays at 4’ series will be held on Sunday, August 28, 4 pm at Christ Episcopal Church (15th & H streets), Eureka.  Sponsored by the Christ Church Concert Series, the program is free, open to the public.  The program will feature a newly-formed local women’s chorus Kantorei, directed by Betty Burton, choral director at Christ Episcopal Church.  Sixteen women singers comprise the chorus, which performs primarily a capella (unaccompanied).  Instrumental accompaniment provided by Nancy Streufert, flute and Merry Phillips, piano on select pieces.

The word “Kantorei” comes from a time when Protestant German noblemen would employ singers to perform for the courts.  The group of singers were led by a Kantor, and thus called “Kantorei.”  In the United States, choirs for women’s voices first began in 1895.  Music for women also comes embedded in the culture of the women who first sang it.  The newly formed “Kantorei” will perform a program of works representing many traditions and eras of music:  a program reflecting both historical tradition and contemporary time.
