NCRC Extreme Weather Volunteer Training

What:

Can you spare a night or two or three each winter to help those without adequate shelter stay warm and dry? Come learn how you can help. Training for community volunteers that want to help North Coast Resource Center (NCRC) conduct the coordinated Extreme Weather Shelter will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the Arcata Service Center, 501 Ninth Street, Arcata, across from the bus terminal. This training will include what to expect and what is expected from you as a volunteer for this vital service. You can become a part of the rotating cadre of volunteers called to help when a shelter night is initiated. Call 822.5008 if you need more information about this training.

This is the fifth winter NCRC has coordinated this emergency effort. Extreme Weather Shelter (EWS) is an as-needed services coordination program designed for individuals that have no access to adequate shelter during nights when severe weather is forecast. Severe weather may be temperatures falling below 32°F, when there is sustained gale force or higher winds expected or the wind chill factor is predicted to fall to 32°F or lower, or when torrential rains are expected. The service is a partnership between NCRC and the Humboldt All Faith Partnership (HAFP), and participant local churches. This service prevents overuse of medical facilities for the attendant health and/or safety problems that may be caused by exposure to extreme weather for any duration of time, such as over night.
