Arcata, California. April 9th – Tim Clewell, Lizzy Dostal, and Jenn McKibbin will be holding their reception for their art exhibition in the Karshner Lounge on the HSU campus on April 9th from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition, Exquisite Corpse, will feature a selected body of work (paintings and drawings) that will feature works that were created while the three artists studied art at Humboldt State University. In the collaborative series the three artists decided to undertake the idea of the exquisite corpse; an activity invented and first employed by the surrealists. Exquisite corpses were co-invented by surrealism’s founder Andre Breton and were started as a creative exercise. They hadn’t materialized as drawings and collage yet, but were more of a literary game. The game evolved into drawings where a piece of paper was folded into however many participants there were. The drawing was to be passed along and each subsequent participant would not have any idea as to what the previous participant had done as the paper was folded concealing the drawing made prior. The results often made no sense. In the surrealist spirit Clewell, Dostal, and McKibbin have taken the exquisite corpse drawing exercises and translated the method using paint. We wanted to investigate the function of the exquisite corpse and see how it would change if color, texture, temperature, were also employed instead of just value and line.
They were also interested in how the subjective subconscious functioned. They placed loose parameters on Themselves; for instance, they would assign a painting a color scheme and would have a theme such as blue and animal. Each artist would create a painting based on our interpretation of what the theme was using the determined color and would apply their individual understanding of these facets visually.

The Karshner Lounge is located on the Humboldt State University 1 Harpst Street, Arcata, CA (above the Depot, next to the clock tower).
