Tell Me a Story

What:

Baba Jamal Koram, a master storyteller in the African-American folklore tradition, and the North Coast Storytellers will perform Saturday, January 16, at 7:00 pm at the Arcata Presbyterian Church at 11th and G.  “Tell Me A Story” is sponsored by the Ink People Center for the Arts. Koram is distinguished in upholding storytelling traditions in a broad spectrum of cultures, from academic settings to youth programs. He is also an advocate for drumming, saying “The stronger the drumming, the stronger the culture.”

According to local storyteller, Dan O’Gara, “Baba Jamal Koram is one of the finest storytellers in America for any audience.” Koram, who will be telling at local schools, reveals connections between African traditions and the African-American experience with his stories that come from different cultures and lands. Rhythm and movement spill from his energetic performances where he tells Anansi tales, Brer Rabbit stories, personal recollections and fables. He will also tell stories honoring Martin Luther King.

The North Coast Storytellers include Anita Punla, Carol Larsen, Dan O’Gara, Seabury Gould, Ali Freedlund, Ross Mackinney, Charlene Storr, and Aaron Garrett. The first hour of the performance will be stories told by the North Coast Storytellers; the second hour will feature Jamal Koram.

Tickets are available at the Ink People Center for the Arts, The Works in Eureka and Arcata, and the Trinidad Trading Company. Tickets will also be available at the door. General admission is $10; $5 for kids under 15.  For more information, call Dan O’Gara at 677-3840.
