Rx: Pets
What:
Rx: Pets and the Humboldt County Library once again invites you to visit the Library on Saturday, May 14th1:30 – 3 pm and join us for another tail-wagging session of the very popular R.E.A.D. ® program.
Rx: Pets has expanded their community efforts to include the highly successful R.E.A.D. ® Program (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), designed by Intermountain Therapy Animals in Salt Lake City, Utah. The R.E.A.D.® program helps improve the literacy skills of children and especially assists with self-esteem issues or learning challenges. Reading to a dog is loads of fun!
This program is free, and all children through age 12 are welcome. To have your children participate in this program, parents are required to complete an initial permission slip and photo release form for each child. Then, to reserve a 20-minute time slot with one of several dogs and a Pet Partner volunteer, on the day/time of your choice, stop by the children’s room at the main Library. Permission forms, sign-up sheets, and R.E.A.D. calendar of upcoming dates, as well as a great selection of books about dogs, will be available. Due to the popularity of this program, advance sign-ups are always strongly encouraged.
The Library’s programs and services are accessible to the disabled. Please let us know if you require assistance. The Humboldt County Library is located at 1313 3rd Street in Eureka. For further information, please call JoAnn or Pat at 269-1910, or visit our website at www.humlib.org.
The mission of the Rx: Pets R.E.A.D.® program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy teams as literacy mentors. The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D. ®) improve children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. R.E.A.D.® dogs are registered therapy animals that volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to, libraries and other settings as reading companions for children.
Prescription: Pets (Rx: Pets), a visiting animal group and an affiliate of Delta Society’s® Pet Partner® program, offers Northern California facilities an opportunity to bring smiles to their clients though volunteer activities such as pet visits (AAA), pet therapy (AAT) and Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D. ®).
Rx: Pets is an all volunteer, non-profit based in Redding, CA since the year 2000. With over 150 members this successful volunteer program trains and screen volunteers with their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools, women’s shelters, libraries and other facilities.
