¡Que Viva Mexico!

What:

Quorum Incendiarios presents ¡*Que Viva Mexico!,* the unfinished work by pioneering Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein. In the early 1930’s, Eisenstein was hired by Upton Sinclair to make a film about Mexican history, and celebrating the country’s 1910 Socialist revolution. He managed to shoot 30 to 50 hours of film, on location in Mexico, before disputes about financing and brought shooting to a halt; he was later unable to edit the film because he was barred re-entry into the United States. Eisenstein was forced to abandon his footage and what has been gone down in history as his “greatest film plan and his greatest personal tragedy.”

This showing presents an edit of the original footage, completed in 1979 by Grigoriy Alexandrov, an assistant during the original shooting. The film consists of great episodes in the history of Mexico’s land and peoples, including the Mayan period, the early colonial period, and the 1910 revolution, with a special emphasis on folkloric elements of Mexican culture, including song and the Dia de los Muertos celebrations. While it is impossible to be certain about Eisenstein’s vision for the film, Alexandrov strove to edit the film as faithfully as possible to the original plans and Eisenstein’s collected notes. The result is a fascinating window into the work of one of film’s early geniuses.

Quorum Incendiarios also will display photos and drawings of their upcoming sculpture Kinetic Pent-Animation, a new project which will debut at Burning Man 2010 and then return to Humboldt County.  Kinetic Pent-Animation is a five-sided, fire-breathing, human-powered sculpture which aims to remind people of the potential of organized direct action by physically manifesting the result of human effort.  All proceeds from the showing of “¡Que Viva Mexico!” will benefit the creation of Kinetic Pent-Animation.  **Quorum Incendiarios are Mark Whitman, Steve Gellman, Michael “Spike” Foster, Zuzka Sabata, Elisa “E” Forgelman, and Brook McCormick, a kinetic/fire art group based in Blue Lake looking to expand the art experience through group energy.

Don’t miss “¡Que Viva Mexico!” presented by Quorum Incendiarios at the Arcata Playhouse, 1251 9th St. in Arcata, on Monday, April 19 at 8 p.m.  Suggested donation: $10. For information call (707) 834-0357 or go to www.arcataplayhouse.org
