Oleanna

What:

The North Coast Repertory Theatre continues its 26th Season with a special one-weekend-only production of the compelling drama Oleanna. The play runs Friday and Saturday, July 2 and 3 at 8pm.

Written by David Mamet, Oleanna is a two-character play about the power struggle between a university professor and one of his female students, who accuses him of sexual exploitation and, by doing so, spoils his chances of being accorded tenure. The play’s title, taken from a folk song, refers to a 19th-century escapist vision of utopia.

Speaking of Mamet in a review of the play when it was produced in New York, Roger Ebert stated that “In two acts, he succeeded in enraging all of the audience - the women with the first act, the men with the second. I recall loud arguments breaking out during the intermission and after the play.”

Oleanna features the very talented actors Gary Sommers and Alexandra Gellner. “We are very fortunate to have these actors and Director Linnea Conway working on this project,” says NCRT’s Artistic Director Michael Thomas. “They are simply excellent. This is a great way to continue our Second Stage series.” Second Stage productions are offered outside the regular season and may consist of one night or one weekend offerings of plays, music, play readings, etc. “It’s a bonus for our season ticket holders—second stage productions are free to them,” adds Thomas.

NCRT is located at 300 Fifth Street, Eureka. Tickets are $8.00 for all seats. For reservations or more information, please call 442-NCRT. **
